neurotically eccentric

I’m not particularly religious, but as I was walking the other day I passed St Joan of Arc Catholic Church. I went to Catholic school all my life so I’m pretty familiar with the stories, people, saints etc.

It occurred to me that back then, we believed everyone when they said they were “talking to God”. There was no real doubt that these people weren’t telling the truth.

In our current day and age, I pass countless people on the street who claim they talk to God, that they’re his apostles and all that. However, now it’s easier to pass these people off as crazy, especially knowing what we know about mental illness today.

But what my thought came down to is this: are these people actually crazy? Are they really just schizophrenic? What if someone like Joan of Arc was born in our time instead? Heck, what if ANY of these people were born in our cynical times? Would we still have saints? A bible? Jesus? Or even a God?
